Pet Surgery Experts in Alpharetta, GA

Although pet owners don’t like to think about it, it’s a fact that pet surgery of some type will be performed on most pets during their lifetimes, whether it’s a complicated operation to treat a serious injury or illness, or a simple routine procedure like spaying or neutering. When your pet does require a surgical procedure, you want to be sure they’re in the care of experienced and qualified veterinarians using the latest medical tools. At Crabapple Animal Hospital in Alpharetta, GA, we maintain a state-of-the-art surgical theater supported by a fully-equipped diagnostic laboratory and a staff of highly-trained veterinary doctors and technicians. When your pet is in need of surgical services in Alpharetta, we stand ready to provide them with the very best of care.

What To Expect During Pet Surgery

A golden retriever with a bandaged leg is examined by a veterinarian using a stethoscope.

If our veterinarian has diagnosed your pet with a condition or injury that requires a pet operation, the first thing they will do is give them a complete pre-op physical examination and order testing of blood, urine, and possibly saliva samples in our diagnostic laboratory. This analysis is performed to uncover any underlying issues that might cause problems during animal surgery, and also allow the vet to create a customized anesthesia protocol personalized for your pet.

During the procedure, your pet will receive pet anesthesia and a catheter tube will be inserted. They will also be attached to an intravenous feed to provide the fluids necessary to maintain normal and stable blood pressure. At all times throughout animal surgical procedures, a surgical technician will be present to monitor sophisticated medical devices to keep a close watch on your pet’s vital signs for any abnormal readings or problems.

Post Surgery

Your pet will spend a couple of hours in the pet surgical recovery room after the operation for observation, and then you’ll be able to take them home, normally on the same day. In some situations, your veterinarian may decide that they should stay overnight with us for further observation and monitoring. It’s a good idea to plan for your pet to spend the whole day at the clinic.

Before you leave, you’ll be given instructions on postoperative care for your pet at home. If you need to schedule any follow-up appointments, it’s best to do that before you leave. In general, while your pet is recovering at home, you should keep them indoors and prevent them from exerting themselves for several days, getting plenty of rest until they are well along in their healing. You may need to take steps to keep them from licking and biting at their sutures, such as fitting them with a cone collar.
